Angel Cards are like the not-so-famous siblings of Hollywood celebrities. There are many perks to reading with them, like the fact that all of the cards have positive meanings, but many readers are hesitant to try them and stick with the familiar.
Although they have a lot to offer, there are so many misconceptions surrounding these tarot decks.
For this reason, we’ve written down everything you need to know to conduct an Angel Card reading: from buying your deck, the difference between Angel Cards, and Tarot Cards, and how to read and interpret the cards for yourself or others.

Today, things are much different as consciousness expands, and people come to realize that seeking guidance isn’t evil.
There are many beautiful Angel Card decks available online, each containing unique imagery. Some Angel sets will have the full Angelic message written on the individual cards, while others have just a few simple words, such as ‘healing’ or ‘wisdom’, or come with a book that can be used as a guide.
Figuring out which deck to buy can be daunting. For this reason, we’ve compiled a list of the most popular Angel Card decks available. The “Daily Guidance from your Angels Cards” is my favorite Doreen Virtue deck. The messages on these cards are very touching, beautifully written, and uplifting, like getting a hug from one of your angels.
Apart from that, the readings have been so accurate! Every time I used this deck I’ve received a simple, bang-on-the-nose, and really positive and supportive response in return.

WHAT ARE ANGEL CARDS?
Angel Cards, like all Divination Decks, are sets of cards with images that can be used to help one connect to his or her own intuition and make decisions about the future.

TAROT CARDS VS ANGEL CARDS
Here’s a hard truth: not everyoneconnects to tarot cards. This is true for both the reader and seeker of guidance. But what is exactly the difference between tarot cards and Angel Cards?
Tarot cards are different from Angel Cards in a couple of different ways. For one, the images contained on some tarot cards can have a very negative vibe. They can even be quite scary! Imagine asking about how to move your business forward andreceiving the Tower card.
Also, with78 tarot cards and double meanings for each, interpreting the tarot cards can get tricky. Thankfully, there are many different kinds of cards that can be used for guidance and psychic development.
Besides tarot cards, readers use Spirit Animal Cards, Affirmation Cards, Fairy Cards, and our topic here–Angel Cards. These spiritual decks are often grouped together and labeled Oracle Cards.
Because Angel and other Oracle Cards come in many shapes, sizes, and uses, it is important to get to know each deck and its unique energy. But first, you must get your hands on a set.
HOW TO READ ANGEL CARDS
Do you already have an Oracle Cards or Angel Card deck, or are you planning to purchase one soon? If so, you’re probably itching to do a reading!
There isn’t a right or wrong way to read Oracle Cards per se, but there are things that you can do/not do that can help ensure a more accurate interpretation.
Before actually getting started, you’ll want to keep the following tips in mind.
1. HAVE A CLEAN SPACE
I remember the first time I read Angel Cards for myself. I actually combined them with a tarot reading. What I did was place an Angel Card upright. From a separate deck, I placed a tarot card on top (horizontally), making a cross with the cards.
I was sitting at my kitchen table, which was a bit cluttered. I had been so excited to use the Angel Cards that I forgot one of the most essential rules of card reading of any kind: environment has a huge impact.
Instantly, I felt that things were off, and so I moved to the bar instead. The surface was clear, clean, and what unfolded was an amazing experience. Since then, I’ve made sure always to set the tone before beginning.
2. FOLLOW A RITUAL
Here is a general example of what your ‘pre-reading ritual’ might look like:
- Find a quiet and clean spot to read (if your spot has high energy colors like red or blue, that’s a plus!)
- Usecrystalsandgemstonesto provide the room with a certain quality or energy. For example, you might use or wear amethyst to set an intention of balance. Religious symbols like crosses are an option as well.
- Minimize any distractions beforehand. Turn off your phone and put the kids or barking dog to bed.
- Set the moodby lighting candlesor incense, burning sage, dimming the lights, orplaying some soft musicin the background.
- Let go of any negativityand breathe a few deep breathes as if you are beginning meditation. This helps connect with your higher self.
- Close your eyes and ask the Angels to guide your reading.
3. FIND YOUR ARCHANGELS
To find your personal archangels will help you connect with them during an angel card reading and often receive much clearer messages from them.

4. REACH OUT TO THE ANGELS AND ASK FOR HELP
Who or what are angels, exactly?
Many people have asked me this question when I tell them that I read Angel Cards. I found this great definition that describes Angels as “Beings of Light, who exist in the higher dimensions yet are present in our universe to be of service”. These last four words are important.
You see,Angels want to help us! However, we have free will, and Angels respect that. For that reason, asking for assistance is necessary.
If you’ve followed the ritual above or created your own, you’ll be ready to receive guidance from above. The last step can be extended by holding the Deck of Angel Cards to your heart and asking your Angels to bless them before you begin.
For some, this step might seem a little strange. But the truth is, people have been asking divine beings for assistance since the beginning of time. Don’t overthink it! Just open your heart and ask for what you need while visualizing Angels surrounding you with healing and love.
5. INFUSE THE ANGELS CARDS WITH YOUR ENERGY
Now is the time that you can actually input energy into your deck. It is important that you do this at a time your personal vibration is at an all-time high.
If you are super stressed and rush to the Angel Cards in search of relief, you’ll actually do more harm than good. This is why it is so important to open a new deck when you are in a positive frame of mind.
Take the time to touch each and every card. Shuffle them. Spread them out. Familiarize yourself with their messages.
Then, close your eyes and tune your vibrations into the cards. Ask the Angels that you’ve just connected with to bless the cards with you and set the intention of only using them only for the higher good.
Envision the cards glowing with white light and radiating positivity, love, and truth and answers.
6. ASK THE ANGELS A QUESTION
Now is the time to ask a question. Try not to expect a certain answer but keep an open and clear mind. You’ll want to make sure that your question is:
Here are some examples of common questions that people ask when seeking Angel Card guidance.
- What do I need to know about my current situation?
- What do I need to know about myself right now?
- Is a job in ______ right for me?
- Is a relationship with ______ fully aligned with my energy and dreams?
- What can help me move forward with finances, love, career, education, health, etc.? (Be specific.)
- Is it in my highest good to ______?
- What does the contrast in my life want to teach me?
- I am feeling stuck with ________ (describe the situation,) what can I do?
7. SHUFFLE THE ANGEL CARDS AND FOLLOW YOUR INTUITION
Once you’ve asked your Angels a specific question, shuffle the cards. There are many different ways to shuffle. Again, there isn’t a real right or wrong, just make sure that they are thoroughly mixed.
Then you’ll need to choose a card or a few cards to use for guidance. If I’m reading for someone else, I’ll have them cut the deck into three and then choose one stack. Then, I’ll choose the cards that feel ‘right to me.’
If I’m reading for myself, I usually spread the card out in front of me and use my intuition to choose the card (or cards) I feel drawn toward. Let the reading begin!
8. INTERPRET THE MESSAGE
Now is the part that everyone looks forward to when reading an Angel Deck: interpreting the message received.
This is going to be one of the shortest paragraphs of this article for one reason: you must trust your gut, and what a card means to you can be totally different than what message is relayed to someone else.
Here’s an example. Lisa and Erica both consulted the same Angel Card deck about their relationships with their husbands. Things had been rocky for both women.
Lisa in Los Angeles drew the “Spread Your Wings” card and read the message, “Do not hold back right now, the timing is perfect; you are ready to soar.”
She promptly called up her husband and asked him to dinner. Over drinks, she apologized for her hesitancy to buy into a new business with him. After receiving confirmation from the angels, she was ready to take the leap.
Erica in New England was guided to the same card. After reading over the card several times and holding it to her heart, she called her husband as well. She told him that she was ready to start divorce proceedings.
HOW TO STORE YOUR ANGEL CARDS
When you finish reading, don’t just throw your cards in the closet or desk drawer. Because divine energies attach to these cards, you will need to place them in a spot that is dust-free, out of sunlight, and where they won’t be disturbed.
